Ericsson, IBM's Tivoli In Pact For 3G Mobile Devices

STOCKHOLM -(Dow Jones)- Swedish telecommunications company Telefon AB LM Ericsson (ERICY) and U.S. software company Tivoli Systems Inc. are co-developing a comprehensive set of mobile-device management solutions, Ericsson said Wednesday.

Tivoli, whose software manages the foundations of e-business, is owned by International Business Machines Corp. (IBM).

Ericsson and Tivoli will develop solutions that enable General Packet Radio Service, or GPRS, and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, or UMTS, devices to be manageable out-of-the-box as well as supported and updated remotely.

The alliance will also focus on support and helpdesk services for remote monitoring and configuration of devices as well as software and program updates.

Ericsson will incorporate Tivoli's device management technologies into its own 3G devices, it said.

Ericsson and Tivoli are also working together to propose a set of international standards for managing the next generation of mobile devices. They aim to deliver a standards proposal during the first half of 2001.
