The U.S. Commerce Department said retail sales tumbled 0.4 percent in November, compared to a downwardly revised reading in October. Economists in a recent Reuters poll had expected 0.1 percent growth in sales in November.

Excluding automobiles, which suffered their steepest drop since July 1998, sales rose by 0.2 percent, compared to a forecast 0.3 percent rise and a 0.4 percent gain in October.
