Kenneth, Ciena does indeed have an ultra long haul product, but they make no big deal out of it simply because it is not a big deal, technically or in terms of the market size. It is a niche market. Corvis and Sycamore also offer ultra long haul capability. I believe that Ciena has reported two customers that are currently using its ultra long haul equipment. You can check the archive on the Ciena site for the details. Bear in mind that the longer the distance, the higher the error rate. The error rate can be reduced by reducing the channel count, plus a host of other nifty tricks including Raman amplification, forward and backward error correction, optimized fiber, etc. The world is full of tradeoffs. The PSINet four channel system referenced is not all all impressive for an 800 mile haul. An 80 or 160 channel system over 1000 miles would certainly get my attention though. Jack Hutchison
