If they are so deliberative they should have seen this issue coming. I side with the 2 dissenters who said that there was nothing wrong with the fla sup. court decision- they clearly followed the legislative guideline in sticking with "voter intent". As a lay person it seems to me that the US supreme court just opened lots of new ground here- they have opened the door to assure standardization of
voting machines and procedures for all future presidentials elections. A very unusual decision for a court so concerned with states rights. What do they now if different states have different standards for counting votes? do they strike them down because of voter preference? Who ultimately will determine the national standard? Congress? Thats what it sounds like. Like congress will have to step in and pass legislation mandating what the election recount standards are.

What I do not understand is why the Supreme Court did not stick to the position that there was no machine malfunction, but voter error and therefore there was no reason to count either undervotes or overvotes. That would have been much cleaner.

Gore is a classy guy but I have no idea what he can say in his concession speech that will have much meaning other than to say
that he fought the legal fight because it was the right thing to do. He lost and now its time for he and the nation to move on and unite behind the next president.

I think there will be an enormous amount of whiplash against the republicans from undecided voters. So I strongly agree that we will have a democratic senate in the near future which will make it very difficult for Bush to appoint any heavy duty right wing candidates to the supreme court.

I hope we dont have a real hot summer this year. we could see riots.

I also thing Nader is pretty well cooked politically. No democrat will ever support him after this.
