BSNS WIRE) Essex First to Demonstrate 1 GHz Channel Spacing To Enable As Many As 4000 Channels Per Fiber

Business Editors

COLUMBIA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 2000--With an advancement
that will dramatically increase fiber capacity and make data
distribution more efficient, Essex Corporation, an optical company
developing technology in Hyperfine Wave Division Multiplexing(TM)
(HfWDM), today announced that it is the first company to demonstrate 1
GHz channel spacing using its Hyperfine technology.
This breakthrough demonstration will allow for the transport of
4000 channels. The demonstration system met its design of 16 GHz with
a channel spacing of 1 GHz.
Terry Turpin, Chief Technical Officer, said, "We are very pleased
to have this demonstration system operating as our models predicted.
We see no obstacles in obtaining thousands of channels."
To achieve such performance, Essex is developing the Hyperfine
technology, which improves the data-carrying utilization of fiber by
factors of 5 to 20 because it carries data with much more narrow
channel spacing than existing systems. Hyperfine technology represents
a family of devices, including the Hyperfine Demultiplexer(TM),
Hyperfine Multiplexer(TM), Hyperfine Add/Drop Multiplexer(TM) and
tunable receivers.
A Hyperfine system can be adapted for any channel spacing required
by any fiber-optic communication including gigabit ethernet at 1.25
GHz and even those applications under 1 GHz.
"We expect to demonstrate a 50 GHz bandwidth capability in early
2001," stated Len Moodispaw, Chief Executive Officer. "The Hyperfine
module divides standard DWDM channels into 50 to 100 one GHz channels.
This will enable Hyperfine to have significant impact on the metro and
last mile problems with greater fiber capacity and more efficient data
distribution compatible with CMOS technology."
As previously announced, Essex has a patent pending for the
Hyperfine module.
