The 49.99999% of the voters who voted for both candidates only represent about half of registered voters, and less than half of people who could register but haven't. Both parties, to move ahead, have little chance of wooing the voters already committed to the other party, and must woo those in the middle who didn't vote.

You're right, there was something special about Reagan. But also, when he ran for office, I think that the Republican party opposition to abortion was less entrenched. I agree with McCain, the Republican hard-line on abortion is making it hard to win.
