Hi Mitch
I don't think that saying we cannot know everything about God and His motives, (that would require us to be God) necessitates our taking the opposite and equally erroneous position that we cannot know anything about Him. Deuteronomy 29:29 Says;
"The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law."
I think a fair reading of this passage tells us that God has simply not told us everything, but what He has revealed to us we can trust. That is not to say, I don't believe there is an answer, just that It is not as explicit as other things.
Yes God could have made us in our final form to begin with and skipped allowing evil to ever exist. He has chosen in His own wisdom and for His own purpose to allow it. It would be sheer speculation on my part to try and second Guess the Creator and Sustainer of the universe so I won't try except to say that God is glorified in all things, not only in His love and mercy, but also in His justice.

"Do you understand just enough about God?"

Let me turn that around and ask you about your understanding of God. Do you have any confidence at all that if you were to die this day (God forbid) that you would find acceptance before a Just and Holy God? What would be the basis for that acceptance?
May God bless you today Mitch
Greg
