I foresee a chasm in the Senate between the Southern Republicans and the Northern Republicans. GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine, for example, has much more in common with, say, Lieberman of Connecticut and Leahy of Vermont (both Democrats) than Trent Lott or the other Dixiecrat Republicans. (Both GOP Maine senators voted with the Dems on both impeachment charges vs. Clinton, I believe.) Also, the GOP senators split 30-20 in the recent Senate leadership vote ... 60 percent backing the more conservative candidate. The solidity of the GOP will be thoroughly tested in the first year. We'll see how well Lott can keep the troops together. Daschle will have a much easier time doing such.
