Re: "Do you still think it is appropriate for Jesse Jackson to make such claims?"

Yes. He speaks for the disenfranchised. He is exercising his constitutional right to speak freely. What he is saying is no more inflammatory than what I have heard from numerous politicians and right-wing commentators during and after the election.

"Do you think it helps society as a whole or Jackson's constituency?"

Interesting question. I would answer it this way: When Jackson speaks, he tends to address those on the other side of the aisle. He doesn't do a lot of preaching to the choir. Doesn't have to. He is good for America if, for another reason, he makes the right accountable for its actions. Otherwise, politicians like those on the far right in the Florida House of Representatives would try to run roughshod over the disenfranchised in their state.

Re: "I hope that most blacks do not share his views, but when I hear that 93% of them vote for Gore, I fear that many do."

If you're an African-American living in Columbia, S.C., who's your friend? The guy in the state Capitol who flies the Stars and Bars right under Old Glory or Jesse Jackson?
