Actually, I recommend Mobius's book, Passport to Profits to anyone who wants just a glimpse into the travails of emerging markets.

And your anecdotes should cause us to remember, once again, why so much capital created over there, finds its way over here for safe-keeping.

complained about the lack of bankruptcy code in SE Asia. It is exactly this lack that saved SE Asia.

Seems to me that ripping off western investors/lenders would be both an interesting way to get some free "progress", as well as a way of alienating Indonesia from the west and moving them towards China.
