William, Microsoft has been investing in open directories for years now. Exchange was structured around X.500 standards, and Cairo was to deliver DAP support for that directory. We have been working with LDAP for quite a while, since before the Netscape LDAP announcements. I certainly applaud the work Tim Howes of U.Mich has done on LDAP and on Netscape elevating its visibility.

An open directory infrastructure is good for all and has been a cornerstone of our directory strategy all along... remember, we've been battling Novell and NDS for years. X.500 and DAP, and now LDAP (simpler internet focused DAP) were key pieces in our response to Novell. This is one area where Netscape and Microsoft both win if it takes off.

Further, I would argue that our directory will be more open than any other in planet earth. Not only will it support LDAP queries, but it will use open protocols for replication and partitioning and will support other open query mechanisms like ODSI.
