Ted, as far as I know, Intel has not made public their capex plans for 2001. When asked 2 weeks ago on the CC after the warning, Bryant said it was too early to give an estimate for capex in 01. He said give him until mid January. Sounds like an author trying to sell copies.
Last week, it boosted its 2000 capital spending target from $6 billion.
That one was because (Bryant said) they could take delivery of some equip. for the Colorado plant, for flash, early because someone could deliver earlier. Bryant said they'd take that piece, or pieces, as soon as they could get it. Flash is still hot.
Sure, they pushed out the Irish plant, maybe some other stuff, but I don't think they'd previously announced an amount for 01, which the author is making a story around (38% spending cut). If they do spend 4 billion in 01, that's still equal to the second biggest amount in a year that I can remember. Things appear to have slowed a lot though, not denying that.
