PSINet Activates OC-192 Links between Canada, New York and Atlanta; Increased Network Capacity to Meet Customers' Demand for High Bandwidth Services and Applications

ASHBURN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 13, 2000--PSINet Inc. (Nasdaq:PSIX), the Internet Super Carrier, today announced that in response to customer demands for greater bandwidth, it has increased its network capacity with OC-192 circuit connections on the U.S. East Coast and entry points into Canada.
Four OC-192 wavelengths, or an aggregate of 40 gigabits per second speed, will connect four PSINet hosting centers located in Toronto, New York City, Herndon (VA) and Atlanta.
The upgrade was necessary to satisfy current PSINet customers' needs for higher bandwidth services, such as multimedia streaming and managed back-end software applications, as well as handle PSINet's high profiled web site customers that receive millions of web hits each day.
The upgrade increases capacity by a factor of sixteen from the company's current network speed of OC-48, and allows PSINet to carry commercial traffic at the highest Internet Protocol (IP) transmission speeds available today.
PSINet has deployed OC-192 capacity in 830 route miles linking Buffalo, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Albany. The company has also upgraded a second path consisting of 514 route miles connecting Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and New York City.
These two paths that connect the PSINet hosting centers located in Toronto and New York City with high capacity IP infrastructure, will be fully operational carrying customer traffic by December 31, 2000.
In addition, PSINet announced that it has activated 800 route miles of OC-192 capacity along the East Coast that connects New York City, Newark, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Wilmington, Washington, Richmond, Greensboro, Raleigh, Charlotte, and Atlanta. This path connects PSINet's New York City, Herndon, and Atlanta hosting centers.

The increased capacity will also improve PSINet's private peering locations in New York, Herndon and Atlanta. PSINet offers global private peering, or transit services that enable Tier One Internet Service Providers (ISPs) access to the Internet via PSINet's global IP network.
The OC-192 fiber capacity was activated using Nortel Networks' (NYSE:NTL) OPTera Long Haul optical line system. This platform is based on dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) technology for long haul networks. Through DWDM, multiple wavelengths can transfer voice, data and other high bandwidth applications.
The OC-192 bandwidth is seamlessly integrated into PSINet's Global IP network with high performance, optical Frame-Relay switches and IP routers from Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO) and Juniper Networks (NASDAQ:JNPR). The underlying fiber providers for the upgrade include Broadwing Inc. (NYSE:BRW), MetroMedia Fiber Network (NASDAQ:MFNX) and 360networks Inc. (NASDAQ:TSIX).
