Dan3:

"That AMD is going to make a solid profit this quarter under these conditions is a surprise." and testimony to an efficient operation, as comparative Q4 financials will undoubtedly underscore...

What happenned to Q4 sales???
1. Fed continued hard line on interest rates.
2. Election marathon.
3. Energy prices approaching $35 at times.
4. Most importantly, 50% decline in Nasdaq market cap...i.e. trillions??? of "paper wealth" vanished and with it trillions??? of discretionary spending...and with this large loss in dicretionary spending, all of a sudden, as you have pointed out, computer upgrading and computer new purchases are no longer "necessities" in the eye of the consumer who has lost 50% of his/her "paper wealth" but a luxury, and as a luxury item, relegated to a lower positioning on the consumer's priority purchase list...

Signs of change in the economic environment:
1. Fed appears poised to loosen up on rates.
2. Election marathon now over.
3. Energy prices now below $30...and many projecting an average of 425 in Y2001.
4. Nasdaq appears to be bottoming in the 2600 to 3000 range.Anything over 3000 signals the reappearance of "paper wealth" in some portfolios and the consequent increase in discretionary spending which can only be good for the tech market...

Sure hope we see a resurgence in tech market indices in Y2001...As you say Dan, if AMD can make $0.50 in this environment, that's good news...Imagine the potential in a favourable environment should that appear at the end of the current tunnel!!!
