I knew quite well someone who was in charge of civil defense for the area around San Jose during World War II. He said that until the Battle of Midway there was a real likelihood of a Japanese invasion of the West Coast. It may not seem that way now, but if there had been no Pacific fleet, what was to stop the Japanese from at least trying it?
