Don't fret, folks. We'll be reading and hearing a lot more about this in the next few days.
And does anyone doubt, whether for reasons of conscience or otherwise, there's a natural tendency for 15 minutes of fame in this golden media-rich age?
Will it happen? It could happen. How?
Well, let's see. There'd be book royalties, television appearances, public speaking fees, free meals and drinks, maybe an elector-investor who didn't get his Bush bounce--all kinds of benefits for an elector who opts not to follow what happened in Florida. After all, they'd only end up being a hero to more than half the nation (polls say those who didn't vote would have preferred Gore); and a goat to less than half the nation.
Beyond all of the above, which I present with as much satire as realism, there's some really solid reasons for some electors to switch. I think The Nation article nicely highlights some of 'em.
Importantly, it's now being reported several news agencies are filing court briefs to resume Florida's counting. Wonder what'll happen if the Florida count is released pre-electoral college vote?
Should Gore win the actual electoral college vote, would Bush demand a recount? Would dimples on the cheeks of newly non-partisan electors count? |
