I believe if you look a little closer at my original post, I've offered up a scenario. Is it a safe assumption that machines are reliable in tallying overvotes but unreliable in tallying undervotes? But let's put all that aside for a moment and ask ourselves one fundamental question.

Why would so many people vote for more than one candidate?

Nobody has a clue and nobody has been able to offer up a explanation near as convincing as why undervotes occur(i.e. some just choose not to vote for a pres candidate but there are other issues they want to vote for). That being the case, the fact that there is no good explanation, why wouldn't overvotes be subject to manual inspection as well?
