There may be a lot of life left in SONET as a metro technology. The interest in Cyras may be proof of that. Ever since Gilder wrote his article, some people have been anxious to dismiss SONET but it seems to be a pretty good market right on through 2001. DWDM is definitely coming on as a long haul technology but SONET seems here for a while as a metro technology.
