I simply wanted to point up that the Betamax comparison is specious. Beta and VHS may both have been proprietary but the real reason Beta lost was because Sony refused to license their technology and VHS technology was made available at a reasonable price to competitors. It wasn't simply market adoption (sales) which decided between the two it was Sony's attempt to protect their technology by limiting it to their hardware platform that killed it as a standard. Apple went on to make the same mistake Sony did, thinking that having a technology that was incrementally better would be enough to protect their monopoly. If anything it is the incumbents that are in the position of not accepting the direction that the market wants to go, wanting to force rigid standards in order to protect themselves and their investments.
