MSFT took a public thrashing back in the mid nineties when they postponed Win 95. They invented the art of earnings management so I can assure you that they decided to announce a shortfall this Q primarily because it is widely accepted that PC sales are in the toilet anyway. I can assure you that this is deliberate on their part. Bad news on top of nothing but bad news has less effect, might as well pile it on and get it over with in a quarter where everyone's expectations are diminished already.
