I don't know anything at all about Cheney and alcohol, but I do know he is one of a tiny handful of republicans who when he was in Congress voted against Medicaid funding of abortion for poor women even in the case of rape or incest. When he was asked about this this year, he did say he could support Bush's position that offered an exception in the case of rape or incest. That tells me that his principle on the issue was so strong it justified forcing a girl impregnated through rape by her father carry his child but not so strong it justified jeopardizing a VP nomination for himself. Maybe there's another explanation I'm not thinking of, though. It has struck me that as a first big decision by Bush, choosing as VP a guy who's had three heart attacks, bypass surgery and is still unwisely overweight is a little questionable.
