Goldman Sachs: Forecasts S&P 500 Index At 1650 End 2001

With the S & P 500 still selling at historically high valuations, and with the economy expected to grow at 3 -5 % this next year why do they think that the S & P 500 will increase 23% over this next year? Maybe they expect 20% inflation.

SYDNEY (Dow Jones)--Abby Joseph Cohen, chief U.S. strategist for Goldman Sachs (GS), says the investment bank forecasts that the S&P 500 "will be at fair value 12 months from now" around 1650 points.

"We think there is an opportunity for stock prices to rise," Cohen told a conference.

The S&P 500 closed Thursday at 1340.93, down 19.06 points.
