Voice and Language Technology Forum Holds Inaugural Event
BusinessWire, 12/14/2000 17:31

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 14, 2000--General Magic, Inc. (Nasdaq:GMGC), a leading voice application services provider, today announced that the first meeting of the Voice and Language Technology Forum held earlier this week exceeded all expectations. With distinguished linguists from academia and industry as well as technology partners, industry analysts and media in attendance, General Magic hosted an evening of thought provoking discussion and dialog, which was co-sponsored by IBM, Intel Dialogic, Nuance and SpeachWorks. Speaking at the inaugural event were Geoffrey Pullum, professor of linguistics at University of California, Santa Cruz and Geoffrey Nunberg, principal scientist at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and a consulting professor of linguistics at Stanford University. Each spoke on the topic of whether English will be the global language of technology. For General Magic, this event was yet another step in raising awareness around the importance of linguistics, sociology, and psychology that result in state-of-the-art voice dialogs. The Voice and Language Technology Forum will be holding an event jointly with the Computerworld Smithsonian Program in the Spring of 2001, the content of which will become a part of the permanent collection housed by the Smithsonian and the National Museum of American History.

The Voice and Language Technology Forum was founded in October 2000 to explore and further the understanding of the role linguistics plays in the emerging market for voice technology and applications.
