Heinz, that is a perfect example of the very type of touted "statistic" that I don't really trust at all. Yes indeed, from where did all those funds come? Maybe since the 401K investor is not shoppping at the malls like last year they are now putting all that loot into MF's.

Nor do I trust the gov's numbers either; here is an example: I believe that if there is any single explanation for the ongoing "tame" wage inflation numbers (as compared to the late 70's when we had substantial wage inflation) it is the influx of foreign workers (especially undocumented) that has occured this decade and changes made by the Clinton administration to make it easy to hire these people "without risk" to the employer, changes made mostly since 1994.

Here in north Georgia is the tufted carpet industry, some 60% of all the broadloom carpet in the world is made here. Dalton, the "seat" of the industry had a total population in the mid 80's of under 50,000; now social workers here estimate that there may be as many as 150,000 UNDOCUMENTEDS here (mostly Mexican). Of course this vast pool of workers has been a real boon to the carpet industry.

I was in a friends plant recently (small outfit making hi-end pillows, with maybe 25 workers) and I asked how many of these were "undocumenteds" and he laughed and said that he thought that probably every last one of them! The story is the same all over the area.

Of course, NOWHERE could these workers be tabulated in the GOV numbers, after all they are "undocumented"!
