Academia is a little island of socialism in the midst of America. It is ridiculously insulated against market pressures, not only from its customers (students and their parents), but from its benefactors (alumni and other donors), for whom it competes for the charitable dollar. Government subsidizes even "private" universities to an extraordinary degree. Thus, campuses become hide- outs for those who would have difficulty flourishing in a truly competitive situation, and the values of the coddled become pervasive.....
