Bob,

If you have physical possession of your shares you can call your broker and place a sell order whenever you please. Once they are sold you have a few days to deliver the shares to your broker. It's been a while since I've sold shares I've held physically but I believe I always had something like 3-5 days to what (If I rememer the term correctly) they called the "settlement." I use a nationwide brokerage which has a local office and I just drive over with my shares and sign them over. FYI the shares have an id, which is called the cusip, which I assume allows your broker to confirm you actually own the shares you are selling without actually seeing them.
