The company being in Calif and you being in Illiois might not be a problem, since they chose to serve an Illinois consumer, unless you signed a statement that jurisdiction would be only in Calif. And even then, many small claims courts will disregard that on the basis that they are intended to be easy forums to resolve disputes and it's better for the co to come to Illinois than for you to go to Calif.

I sue out of state companies in small claims court fairly often, and never have a problem.
