I think Dale's point is that it is better to pay 5% royalty on a $40 Northbridge than on a $200 CPU

That issue shows how silly the Rambus royalty scheme is. The memory controler might be physically part of a northbridge of physically part of the CPU but its the same thing. Whats next are they going to sue the box makers for 5% royalties on their sales because all PCs have memory controlers.
