On a brighter note, Sun spokeswoman Kasey Holman said the UltraSparc-3 based Sunblade 1000 workstation has been shipping in volume but not enough products are available to meet demand.

"We've had to prioritize shipments for our top 50 accounts," Holman told CBS MarketWatch.

She was responding to concerns raised by research firm Sanford Bernstein about the availability of the company's UlraSparc-3 64-bit microprocessor-based products.

As for UltraSparc-3 based Sunfire servers, Holman said the product shipped on time in September but that one configuration of the system has experienced limited availability.

"We're on track to roll out our UltraSparc-3 based mid-range and high-end servers within six months," she said. "In fact, beta units of mid-range UltraSparc-3 based servers have already been shipped to 14 customers."
