Ed: Are you forgetting that the fED is an independent agency.
Greenie is republican. but much less tight stringed than Volcker.
FED tightening and loosening has effect only when the markets are ripe for that.
Even today companies can get money for justifiable capital spending for infrastructure. Spending even on infrastructure should not be looked at as always best for the economy. When that spending loose like what dotcoms did and what the CEOs did with stockholders money, clamps have to be put in.
So many of our institutions are still loosely run. Starting from managements which don't like to tell us the real story, accounting firms more interested in their IT and management consulting revenues than doing proper auditing, acquisitions based on improper DD, I can give you a slew of things that together can effect the economy adversely. Greenie and Analysts are not as powerful as these boards depict them to be. Greeni happen to do the right things in his power at the right time. He may be the horse, but he is still only one piece in the chess game.
