Hi CB,

The California storage issue is highly localized, according to what I could glean from the AGA presentation in front of Frank Murkowski's Senate Energy Subcommittee. We actually have enough gas in storage, on a national basis, to see us through the winter. The California mania in natural gas prices was largely driven by speculators. Too bad they are so destructive. They've nearly managed to bankrupt PG&E and SCE. Two utilities that have survived the Great Depression and a couple World Wars. But the combination of de-regulation and speculation has just about proven to much for them.

We are getting regional reports on Oregon Public Broadcasting about a major summit to occur out here soon, hopefully. Gov. John Kitzhaber of Oregon and Gov. Gary Locke of Washington are both calling for a meeting to try to deal with what otherwise is going to be a cronic crisis.
The is a clear instance where the "market" is failing to provide for the welfare of the players and the public.

Regards, Ray
