Reading the PZL 10q and last year's 10k
Penzoil has three divisions, and other "Jiffy Lube" centers that are accounted for separately.
The division that includes motor oil products is "Lubricants and Consumer Products". Lubricants are basically the motor oils while consumer products all various types of auto products ranging from car wax to air fresheners. The motor oils are distributed in over eighty companies and various retail centers (eg Pep Boys) as well as what are referred to second tier locations like convenience stores (eg. 7-11's) as well as gas stations.
The motor oil sales include both sales to garages and directly to consumers. Per the SEC 10q & 10k there was no detailed breakdown of the 3 division numbers into the various subcatagories of lubricants and consumer products or lubricant sold to the consumer vs sold to garages et cetera. Regardless the amount of net sales annually for just this one division containing motor oil were quite substantial and are as follows:
from 10 q:
Net sales for the Lubricants and Consumer Products segment were $502.4 million and $1,516.8 million for the quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2000,
Net sales, all of which were to the Lubricants and Consumer Products segment, were $49.7 million and $142.2 million for the quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2000, respectively.
from 99 10k:
LUBRICANTS AND CONSUMER PRODUCTS. Net sales for the lubricants and consumer products segment in 1999 were 1,894.3 mill ($1,894,300,000) million compared to net sales of $960.5 mill ($960,500,000) for 1998.
===================== Though it is true most people do not change their own oil, it is also true that many people do buy several quarts betw. oil changes to top off their oil at gas stations or that they keep in their vehicles. Considering the number of cars on the road, that is still a significant market for product sales. Moreover, per this promotion, I see nothing that precludes an autoshop that buys oil, through a relationship with a retail distributor, from participating in this promotion.
Are the incentives great enough to log on and register, saving one's cap to get a basketball or video? Will most people log on just to register for final four tickets without buying any products? Will most people not know to log onto the website unless they buy the product? Will some people simply throw out the caps? Will the promoted incentives be the small difference that makes he consumer buy Penzoil instead of STP? Will this promotion that says "wins a chance for final four tickets and NCAA basketball prizes" by buying Penzoil motor oil be advertised at basketball games and possibly on television or through other mass marketing targeted to basketball fans during b-games to whom these seemingly unexciting (to some) incentives are quite appealing?
Who is providing the free one year internet and how is that tied into the promotion? What if that free provider is one of the big two free ISP's?
How is the volunteered info going to managed, and what models can be extracted from that info for future PZL sales, mycard sales, and affinity sales?
Right now I'm pleased that the site looks well done and will be very interested to see how this promotion proceeds.A lot of questions that if not answered affirmatively will mean more non-execution. It will be very interesting to see if the Roix regime can actually execute the model that Gordoon could only promote.
With the data mining in house via Affinity, what may have previously seemed unprofitable may be quite profitable. Plus were there IT revenues derived from this promotion for GS?
Just how much exposure will GS derive from piggy backing off of PZL, and how much traffic will this direct to GS? Will this directed traffic lead to more hits and affiliate buy throughs making the advertising space more valuable without the onus of the costs for advertising that space?
The 10k or 10q that accounts for Affinity will be interesting. Where the 8-k is for this acquisition is a legitimate question, and should be asked everyday until it is released....
Again a lot of questions..... a lot of reasons for skepticism but a few for guarded optimism as well.
Haven't been tossed in SI jail since June of '99 except for one 2 day stint, plus have apologized to many for many of my past over emotional over reactions.... even to birdy though he's still acerbic toward me... (Though one or two IMO have been too reprehensible and radical for me). Maybe from the Christian beliefs I hold, I believe some can learn from their mistakes and redeem themselves, while I realize others can't. Some can atone while some lack the self awareness for such contrition.
Regardless of my own soul searching, at this time I'm willing to see if what has IMO always been an interesting b-model can actually and be finally implemented in such a way that it actually generates revenues by Roix.
I know TIGI's history, I know my own history... but unlike some others I choose to live in the present rather than loiter in the past.
Yes there are legitimate reasons for concern, and yes I may be wrong or naive to take additional risks. However, IMO the b-model has actually improved and I want it to succeed, though I realize that there is a good probability that it won't as history may again repeat itself.
Again though pseudo saviors slinging insults ranting like drama queens aren't IMO constructive or serving any ones needs other than their own regardless of their contrite pretense.
Anyway time will tell and I have the time to wait.
Well, I just wasted another 15 minutes of my life.... (Writing is pretty effortless for me and doesn't demand that much effort ) Oh well , in contrast to many, I spend very little of my time compared to those who post so frequently during the day as well as at night over a stock they do not own....when many like myself with real jobs are working.
