Specific sobriety limits reflect more political compromise than measure of impairment. I seem to recall Indiana having a BA limit of .15 at one time, and some of the European states having limits in the .05 range.

It's more of a matter of a responsible and serious attitude towards public safety. I've known many people who have *always* taken this seriously with respect to driving while intoxicated, not just since it became a "big deal".

I recall the story of a prominent local lawyer who blew a .38 and still managed to pass the field sobriety tests such that nothing was evidence of intoxication until an actual alcohol test was performed. As the attorney who related this to me explained "To be a successful lawyer, you must practice law and practice lunch". Evidently, the .38 guy had a lot of practice at lunch.

Certainly you wouldn't have us believe that the mere fact that something was commonplace at one time in any way justifies it at that time or any other?
