Carl, but if someone else did switch the light on for him, that was alright for him to use, or of course, if the light was switched on before the holiday. I have a friend that few years back converted (from being a Quaker) to Orthodox Judaism, he finds no problems with these rules and regulations, neither did I, my problem was with the "almighty" itself. Yes the departure was permanent (orthodoxy), it took about as year (I had to find a youngster to change places with, and I did, a complex story).
As for th math, I am a physicist, and as you must know, without "Mother Math", we physicists stumble in the dark.
