<< Two and a quarter billion potential ears in AWE >>

AWS currently has 270 million licensed POPS (sets of ears).

I'll let them do the math, but 2.7 million is the divisor. <g>

Even with new spectrum they are currently bidding on there are not a lot of new POPS to obtain.

They have a somewhat torturous path to 3G but Cingulars will be even more torturous.

All in all however, it appears that AWS made an intelligent decision to finally switch technologies from IS-136 TDMA to evolved GSM.

Better late than never.

It is VERY early in the migration of wireless from voice, to voice and data.

Their timing may be excellent.

AWS biggest asset (other than their brand image) is that they are already deeper in spectrum in a combination of both 800 MHz & 1900 MHz than any other US carrier.

They have 2 excellent global partners (BT Cellnet & DoCoMo) focused on data applications, and global voice and data roaming.

With the possible exception of VoiceStream they have the best global roaming apparatus already implemented in the United States, and it is being enhanced in partnership with Ericsson.

Joining the GSM community provides them with world wide network to network interoperability.

Tough migration. Smart move.

Cingular has some tough decisions ahead, but they are already part way to GSM, and AWS has paved the way for a similar migration by creating tremendous economies of scale for a GSM overlay. BUT Cingular is not as deep in spectrum, and 1xMC/1xEV might be a better move for that reason and that one alone.
