Kinross, Bema to reopen Chile mine for a few months
VANCOUVER, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Kinross Gold Corp. (Toronto:K.TO - news) and Bema Gold Corp. (Toronto:BGO.TO - news) said on Friday they will reopen their jointly owned Refugio gold mine in Chile for at least the first five months of next year.

The companies said they expect the mine, which suspended in-pit operations on Nov. 9, to produce about 80,000 ounces of gold in the five month period, at an operating cash cost of about $230 per ounce.

The mine is expected to cease mining activities again in May 2001 due to the current low price of gold and ``the requirement for significant capital expenditures'' to keep it running in the second half of the year, the firms said.
