Solon--Carl Sagan discusses the meteor(?) strike in Russia in one of his books. There was a comet coming through at the same time. He felt it was a piece of the comet. Comets tend to be largely a big load of slush sometimes with a carboniferous core depending on the comet.
So the Earth was pretty much hit by a snowball. That would explain the air burst and the lack of debris. (Some microhits have been recently found I understand).
Many of the eye witness reports I tend to discount to a large extent. Some of the often quoted people were even knocked unconscious by the blast. They had one perspective of a very singular event and no experience with such things understandably enough.
All the Best
