Thomas Jefferson might have argued that it is better to leave the tree where it is, if the reasoning that allowed for a government effort to remove it led eventually to the government going into the pension business (Social Security) or the health insurance business (Medicare). The ultimate corruption of the citizenry and consequent destruction of liberty might indeed make it preferable for each individual to work around the tree as best as they can.

We have made the choices, gone down the wrong road, and are witnessing the dominance of ignorance and the decline and fall of the American culture. The culture will ultimately attempt to resurrect itself. The answer to the question of whether that struggle is easy, beneficial, and thus well-received, or leads to a great destructive catastrophe and unwanted results, is in the events of our time. Let us not see them only when it's too late.
