It is true anyone can sign up freely for AOL IM whether one is a member of AOL or not. Others like MSN, YHOO, CMGI feel their members , w/o signing separately for AOL IM , should be able to send IMs to AOL IM members. AOL IM , if opened up to other ISPs, they can bombard AOL members with all sorts of messages which they cannot do now. They can also try to derive any revenue advantage like AOL can do now. One disadvantage to the AOL members is we get torrents of messages from unwanted people. AOL is correct in insisting privacy and security of is members. Of course open access to IMs is beneficial to all in the long run if proper technology ensuring security and privacy is in place.
