Bloomberg has picked up a story in the japanese press about a huge deal between cree and roh.
can't wait to hear herb's take on this deal. LOL! goodbye herb. uw
Tokyo, Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Rohm Co., a Japanese maker of custom-designed integrated circuits, and Cree Inc. of the U.S. will jointly develop and sell blue light-emitting diodes, used for cellular phone displays, by the middle of next year in world markets, the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported.
Rohm aims to capture as much as 30 percent of the annual 50 billion yen ($444 million) market for LEDs, the newspaper said.
The Japanese company and Durham, North Carolina-based Cree also plan to jointly develop and market blue light-emitting semiconductor lasers within several years, the newspaper said.
Separately, Rohm has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission against Japanese rival Nichia Corp., Jiji Press reported. Rohm alleges that Nichia and its U.S. unit are infringing Rohm's patent on LEDs.
Rohm seeks an injunction against some of Nichia's U.S.- imported products. Jiji said it is rare for the ITC, which gauges the impact of trade on U.S. industry, to handle a case in which both parties are Japanese.
