Similarly, 3GPP has obtained endorsement for its UMTS system and it is likely that will seek and obtain approval of its HSDPA technology (3GPP's equivalent of 1XevDV) in 2001..

This clears up a mystery for me....I never understood why Motorola wasnt attempting use the same techniques on W-CDMA as they were using with 1XTREME. This is just from a random search using Yahoo...

1XTREME and HSDPA
Brian Classon
1XTREME is an evolution of cdma2000 that offers much higher peak and average data rates while maintaining the ability to provide voice and data on a single 1.25MHz carrier. 1XTREME is currently being standardized in 3GPP2. HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Acces) is the analagous evolution of the 5MHz WCDMA standard in 3GPP. The fundamental concepts of both proposals are reviewed, including multicode concatenation, adaptive coding and modulation, hybrid ARQ, and a higher operating point. Sample link and system results are also provided.
