Copper has recently risen in price, but base metals have been weak. Many mines are scambling to keep from going under.

biz.yahoo.com

DAY is closing the Andacollo, for example, and many mines are at break even. That means they have to push more ore to keep afloat. Sort of like a dairy farmer getting more cows to help make payments to the banks and thereby dropping the price of milk because more gallons get pumped into production.

I see the whole thing unraveling. Especially when you have companies hedged as they are where sudden jerks upward in price bring them to near bankruptcy. Look at CBJ--selling at 1/4 when only a couple years ago the stock was several dollars. All metals prices will rise together at one point. And it will happen with a rising stock market too as I believe the next world boom will drag metals along. Just my feel for the situation. You are making many good points, however--investing in metals is always a gamble.
