Bush to Meet Greenspan on Monday, Cheney Aide Says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President-elect George W. Bush will meet
Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan on Monday to exchange
views on the slowing U.S. economy, an aide to Vice President-elect
Dick Cheney said on Sunday.

``Vice President-elect Cheney announced today that President-elect
Bush will meet with Chairman Greenspan on Monday,'' a Cheney aide
told Reuters.

The aide said Cheney had announced the meeting in an interview with
ABC news, to be aired later on Sunday. She did not have a time for the
meeting. Bush was headed to Washington later on Sunday to meet
Vice President Al Gore, President Clinton as well as congressional
leaders on Monday.

The Bush-Greenspan meeting comes against the backdrop of a sharp
slowdown in the U.S. economy, which Bush's team has said
underscores the need for a large across-the-board tax cut that has been
one of the cornerstones of the Texan Republican's campaign.

Greenspan, widely seen as the architect of the record U.S. expansion,
has indicated that he would like to see bulging government budget
surpluses used for paying down the nation's debt rather than to finance
large tax cuts.
