john, your right, stock market money isn't "real" until removed from the markets. that is why the negative us saving rate is so dangerous. 401ks used to offset the negative savings. now they don't. therefore, folks have to save even more to get where they thought they were. more savings = less spending.

re: right to vote. in theory, you may be correct. however, one must remember that human beings are SELFISH creatures. the super smart are no exception. the founders of our govt saw this and put in checks and balances.

too much power in one individual or group of individuals only guarantees that they will vote to enrich themselves at everyone's expense. yes, absolute power corrupts absolutely. the current system sucks, imho. however, it is much better than, say, letting bill clinton solely decide what is right for me.

also keep in mind that very smart people often disagree vehemently on issues. sometimes there is no "right" way.

re: less capable: i don't trust my $$$s to anybody but myself.

john, i strongly recommend a book for you to read - awaken the giant within by anthony robbins. you have TREMENDOUS power to IMPROVE your life and anthony's book does a good job explaining how. a very empowering $10.

investing in your children is great. however, make sure YOU are actively involved, too.

ps - not every place in the world is INSANELY priced. you may have to move... but then again, i did too. i moved from the bay area to find more affordable housing and i'm HAPPY i did. :-)
