Some kind of national initiative to make the mechanics of voting and counting votes more fool proof sounds good to me.

It sounds good to me but how can we achieve this? A new Federal Department of Fair Elections Everywhere (FEE)? Seriously, it seems like a local/state issue. I can’t see how this is will be done without usurping the rights of state and local governments and in the process creating a larger federal bureaucracy or extending the power of the federal government. What happens if a State ignores the national initiatives, will those votes no longer count? Will these States be unable to refuse because we have enlarged the power of the Federal Gov?

The only thing I can think of (I’m sure other will have better suggestions) is to authorize the feds to run an ad campaign such as "Your vote matters, we’ve all seen that, are you sure it counts? Place pressure on your city, county and state officials to make sure your vote counts! Thank you."

As far as Cyberken is concerned I accept his argument that partisanship is a requirement for a successful Democracy. What I find distasteful is his need to push anyone who has a different opinion on things into some group they may or may not belong to. Even when I don’t belong to the group he vilifies, I’m tempted to respond as if I am a member of that group to counter the rhetoric (Fascists etc). Calling the misguided on the left fascists… get real… commies .. maybe.
