Ben,

<< why can't Qualcomm apply its HDR techniques to W-CDMA? - Perhaps it already is being applied - though not directly by QCOM - through a circuitous route - with HSPDA in 3GPP..... >>

As you know I have often wondered why CDG (and QUALCOMM) has elected not to join 3GPP, now that the door seems open to them.

I have assumed that it serves their strategic purpose to stay in 3GPP2.

I further have conjectured that the reason that they stay in 3GPP2 is that:

1. They can have more control over the HDR standard (1xEV-DV) than they would in 3GPP.

2. They can complete the HDR standard (1xEV-DV) quicker than they would in 3GPP.

3. That there may be a similar standard being evolved in 3GPP.

Today was the first time I have specifically seen reference to HSPDA.

I do recall, however, references being made in the May, June time frame, to the fact that there were similar but less proprietary technologies being developed.

Obviously we know QUALCOMM has had HDR in development for some time. and the technology is well protected by patents.

While this is by know means as clear cut as CDMA (any Flavor and !@#$ any Patent Pool) ... you could well be correct in your conjecture.

I'm betting you are.
