Yes, it is very unprincipled. Of course, some people are led to rethink cultural relativism when contemplating widows throwing themselves on their husbands funeral pyres, or young girls subject to clitorectomies, or the continued practice of slavery in the Sudan. The notion that all cultural evolution is adaptive, which has been pushed in recent years, is absurd. Cultural diversity proves the relativity of values about as well as the different rates of mathematical and scientific development prove that there is no valid math and science. Even if our opinions about the dignity of man and the propriety of human rights were arbitrary, we have as much right to hold them as anyone else, and to promote them........
