Banks often demand repayment before the Chinese New Year holiday, which begins Jan. 19 this year, while companies and individuals are struggling to meet loan payments as the economy slows in tandem with earnings. ``Typically in Chinese New Year, liquidity dries up,'' said Cheng Yi-sheng, who helps manage $58 million in Taiwan equities at Taiwan Securities Ltd. ``It's close to the end of year and most institutions and local investors are selling stocks.''
