Is there anyone who doesn't think Powell isn't vastly more desirable in that position than Alexander "I'm-in-charge" Haig?

MB,
both Powell and Haig had their fair share of combat time as young officers. both did well on the fields of combat. both rose to become 4 star generals.

Haig went on to perform honorably and well as a civilian leader. as we all know, he was a no nonsense, take charge guy. at the same time he was highly skilled at the art of compromise. Powell seems to have similar traits.

i find it interesting that Haig is most remembered and often criticised for that (i am in charge) line. our country was in total turmoil. for a few moments, Haig stepped to the plate and provided a leadership figure head to focus on. i have never found it to be inappropriate.

note that the secretary of state is high in the line of ascension to the presidency...with that important fact in mind...Haig's comment that day was certainly in order, at least at that very moment. i met Haig twice last month. i spoke with him one on one. he is a helluva guy...he would be a welcome addition here.

my best buddy (who commanded perhaps our most awesome fighting unit for years) had frequent meetings with Powell prior to and during the gulf crisis. he has assured me that Powell too is top notch. we will now get a chance to see and judge his civilian leadership.

perhaps it will be more prudent to compare Powell's performance as sec state to Haig's performance as sec state after Powell has done the job.
