A well constructed CC plant can last easily 20 years. The basic machinery of the typical 500 MW plant can all last 30 years or so with moderate major overhaul at say 15,20 years.

The problem is at 15 - 20 years the center and most expensive part of the plant, the gas turbine may be in the need of major repairs at a time the technology becomes obsolete. 20 years ago no one would have predicted todays power output/efficiency (still needing to be demonstrated for a 3-5 year period) of the steam cooled H machines. So who knows if it will be cost effective to modify today's technology or replace it 15 - 20 years from now.

CC plants that see allot of cycling will be more likely to expire earlier.

The gas turbine rotor and the HRSG would be two critical components in a decision to retire a plant.

With good transmission access and fuel supply locations it may just be cheaper to build a new plant next door or remove the old one when the cost/benefit can justify it.
